It’s rare, but not unusual for Loki to participate in fighting practice on the training grounds. Thor is surprised to see his brother, who immediately chooses him as a sparring partner; he is surprised yet flattered, as he knows Loki is a good fighter. Technically not as strong and skilled as any other of the Warriors Three and he concentrates more on long-range fighting than close combat, but Loki can be an admirable adversary.
And today, his green eyes spark anger and fury, and Thor doesn’t understand why. Loki usually comments from the sidelines, if he’s not too engorged in one of his beloved books. The few times he physically worked up a sweat was because he was engaged in fighting; he trusts his magic to keep him out of trouble. Today, it’s different. Today, there’s massive force behind the blows, today, Loki hits him with a rage that’s uncharacteristic for him. Thor actually has to raise his shield a few times, lest his head not be split open by Loki’s sword - his brother isn’t holding back.
The fight becomes so intense that the other warriors halt their own matches, and gather around the center court where the two brothers are fighting. Soon, bets are made; mostly on Thor. No one expects Loki to win, and he probably doesn’t expect it either; but for now, he lets go of his withhold anger and fury, and bashes and lunges at Thor, so not like his elegant, composed moves he usually displays in battle. He bashes and bashes, he slams and hacks with his sword, delivering blow after blow. Thor quickly enough devices that there’s no battle strategy behind it, just brute force, and he patiently waits for an opening. It comes after a while, when the vehemence behind Loki’s blows falter just a little, and Thor’s experience allows him to disarm his brother, and with a similar experienced move, he throws him on the ground.
The warriors and bystanders applaud and cheer for Thor, not having considered Loki to be the victor for a moment. The training master shoos them back to their own courts to continue their practice; meanwhile, Thor extends his hand to Loki to help him back up on his feet. It hurts when Loki hisses and bats his hand away. Rolling over, Loki gets on his knees and then quickly straightens himself, stalking out of the center court, leaving his shield and sword. Thor doesn’t understand. He hands his own battle gear to one of those small errand boys and goes after Loki.
Inside the large building, he tracks his brother down to the large communal bath. Loki’s body is sweaty and dirty from the sand and dust, and a few superficial scratches and scrapes mar his pale skin. His hair is out of place, and he tugs in annoyance at his garments to get them off. Thor closes the distance between them, putting his hands on Loki’s shoulders.
“Tell me what’s wrong, brother.”
“Get your hands off of me,” Loki hisses and slithers away from him. He finally manages to undo his belt and drops it unceremoniously on the floor. “Let me enjoy my bath in peace and silence.”
“You’re silent far too often.” Thor frowns. His hands… tingle from the touch on his brother’s shoulders. His naked shoulders, sweaty and muscular. Loki submerges himself into the water, his hands scrubbing at his face. His cheeks are red, and his hair a total mess, the black strands clinging to his wet face. Thor discards his own clothes and steps into the bath as well, enjoying how the hot water soothes his aching muscles. He enjoys his view too; Loki is just in front of him, his eyes dark and narrow. Even though it’s an obvious change from his usual calm and composed behavior, it’s also… exciting somehow. It’s a fury that Thor hasn’t seen in his brother before, and it makes him look… beautiful.
“Talk to me.”
“There’s nothing to talk about, Thunderer. Let it go.” As soon as Loki lifts his hand to make a dismissive gesture, Thor grabs his wrist and pulls him towards him. The water sloshes around them. “Fool! What are you doing? Are you trying to start a wrestling match in the bath?”
“No.” Thor gazes at Loki, staring into his eyes. More anger there, frustration and… sadness? It confuses him more, yet he can’t avert his gaze. A lock of dark hair stresses the lively green of Loki’s eyes, and his lips are slightly parted, drops of water clinging to his skin… “I want to know what’s bothering you, brother.”
“Your damn coronation, that’s what!” Loki frees himself and creates a distance between them, the water sloshing again. He submerges in the water, leaving Thor to his own devices. When he surfaces again, he glares at the Golden Sun, the heir of all that is Asgard, in all its beauty and glory. The destined warrior, the Perfect Child. The darkest shadow ever to fall upon Loki’s life.
“Brother, I don’t understand.” He’s brutally honest, because he really doesn’t understand. Loki heaves a sigh.
“Forget about it.”
“You are to be my advisor,” Thor says, no ifs or buts in his words. “The throne is just a throne. You are going to be by my side, no matter what.”
“As you say, my lord.” Loki leaves the bath and turns around to mockingly bow. “Whatever you say.”
He doesn’t wait for Thor to answer. He wraps a towel around himself and discards an errand boy who wants to hand him even more towels. Perhaps Thor is calling after him, he doesn’t know and he doesn’t care. He should’ve known from the beginning, from the first day in his life, that there would be only shadows and no light. How ironic, that light can’t exist without darkness, and how there’s a light in the darkest darkness. Loki doesn’t believe it. He’s going to snuff out the last light in him, now that they’ve taken his last hope from him. He has hidden his book on portal runes in a safe place; no one will notice what he’s going to do.
Maybe he won’t even notice it himself.
